Wearables Magazine’s  Industry Challenge: Mixed Media
Congratulations to Northeast Stitches and Ink for Taking First Place!

Laconia, NH – On the look-out for its 2014 “Top Decorator,” Wearables magazine recently ran its industry challenge #3, this one for Mixed Media.  Madeira USA president Shirley Clark was asked to participate as one of the judges.  The entries were to be judged on Decoration Proficiency, Mixed Media Integration and Creative Design. Along with the panel of three industry judges, Wearables readers were invited to vote on their favorite.   When Wearables’ editor C.J. Mittica announced the winners, Madeira USA was delighted to learn that Shirley’s choice for first place won First Prize.

Northeast Stitches and Ink, based in South Glens Falls, NY, and represented by graphic designer Sonny Mctiernan and digitizer/embroidery production manager Jeremy Terry took first place.  To add to the generous sponsorship of Hanes Branded Printwear, Madeira USA sent a Mini Snap Cone of each of the new colors (62 solid and 10 multi-) of its 40 weight, 100% polyester Polyneon embroidery thread to the winner. Graphic designer Sonny Mctiernan credits one of NS&I’s owners, Mike Endieveri, with the inspirational creative directive. According to Mctiernan, “Mike wanted us to combine screen printing and embroidery, as it said in the challenge, but he didn’t want to know which was which. He literally said, ‘Any one part that overpowers the other will distract. I want people to like it and not know why.’"

They certainly succeeded! First inspection of the vintage look tee shirt did not appear to contain any embroidery. The technique, of embroidering first, then printing over the thread, gave a subtle, worn, stressed look to the garment. According to Mctiernan, “This has meant a lot to our shop.  Rarely do we get a chance to do something for ourselves… having this chance to explore our own creativity and using our own sensibilities was a fantastic experience. It was fun to come together on a project like this.”

Having won this competition, Northeast Stitches and Ink becomes eligible to compete for Wearables Best in Show grand prize at the end of the year.
